London
Lost: one towel (from my childhood)
Foreign Affairs
SMH crosswords (half complete)
Found: 1 kilogram
Having arrived in the heart of London via the underground to Kings Cross Station, taken a chance on the first street I saw, Euston Road, and then taken a turn onto Pentonville Road, the most natural thing to do (it seemed to me) was to go directly to jail. I asked directions from a passer-by, who advised that The Clink, an ex-19th Century prison and now happening youth hostel, was within eyesight.
I checked in, stowed my luggage, and then went in search of the internet. Instead, I found a refreshing guinness, which doubled as a portal to the net, as the publican gave me the password to the wifi network. London is a lovely place for a budding alcoholic.
I should also note here that Qantas did me a great service by delaying my first flight by about five hours, meaning that I missed my eleven hour stopover in the infamous Delhi Airport and a five hour stopover in Singapore and took a two hour stopover in Frankfurt instead. While the middle-aged man sitting behind me could not believe how far the once-great company of Qantas had fallen and threatened to all who cared to listen (and a great many that didn’t) that Alan Jones would be hearing about the incident, I couldn’t have been more pleased.
So here I am, alive, and will try to continue popping in to give updates here on the blogosphere for the next 9 months. Essentially, I expect the majority of you to drop in periodically to note the last time I was definitely alive, before getting back to your own lives. I will also respond to emails, as ever, and will be on skype under the name michael_david_peters whenever possible and by request. I will also note any phone numbers that I will be available on, where I intend to be etc., here.
Early thanks go to Natalie and Grandma, who together bought me a great backpack, which is alot more appropriate than the rucksack sort of thing that I was planning on using. Also thanks to Pat Schneider who generously donated his copy of The Brothers Karamazov, which will ensure that I never have nothing to do in the next 6 years.
Best wishes,
Michael
Hi Michael. I am very pleased you're still alive. I saw no comments and thought you might be offended.
ReplyDeleteWill you have to throw a double to get out of that youth hostel or just pay $50? Are you the little dog or the battle ship? Surely not the iron!

ReplyDeleteMonday morning seems as good a time as any to blog comment, after all who can be bothered completing July's timesheets!
ReplyDeletePersonally, I will be hanging out for the blog announcing your winning second prize in a beauty contest, I think you could be a contender for a place, what with the 'British smiles' to compete with!
@Jill; thanks for the sympathy comment there. It's comments like those that are going to keep me warm through the long winter nights ahead. And to answer your question, I'm currently the boot and have no intentions of becoming either the car or the boat in the future. The iron has not moved off go yet.
ReplyDelete@Rupert; working on it.
@Quinn; again, the fact that I beat time-sheeting warms me to the core.
@all; stay tuned for a post on a very full four days in Budapest...
Superlative post I really like it. Hostel Kings Cross
